Application procedure
Establishments that wish to apply are encouraged to submit a self-assessment according to their evaluation of the criteria. Subsequently an independent assessor, from a panel of volunteers with expertise in tourism and/or related matters is then sent to the establishment to verify the score, making recommendations and amendments to the score. The assessor's report is submitted to the Management Committee for final evaluation.
Namibia is primarily an environmental destination for tourists. The tourism sector has a strong vested interest in maintaining, and demonstrating that it is maintaining, a clean and healthy environment. Tourists are becoming increasingly knowledgeable about the environment and their environmental footprint. As a result, they are more discerning and selective of where they stay and what they do. This creates a good marketing opportunity for tourism establishments with high environmental standards. Also, careful attention to environmental issues such as water use, energy use and infrastructure design can save significant amounts of money. It is of direct benefit to professional tourism establishments and operators in Namibia to carefully consider and address the environmental issues associated with their tourism business. eco awards Namibia was set up to help you do this.
